Automatic Spa Cover vs Replacement Hot Tub Cover

A worn hot tub cover and an inconvenient cover routine are two different problems. A replacement manual cover addresses the first. An automatic spa cover system can address the second, but it is a larger equipment and installation decision. Choose around your spa, your site and how you want to use the space, not the word “cover” alone.

When a replacement manual cover makes sense

If you want to replace your existing removable cover while keeping the same basic routine, start by confirming the replacement specification with your spa supplier. Match the length, width, corner shape, skirt and attachment details to your actual spa. Consider how you will lift, fold and store the cover, and whether an appropriate cover lifter would help. A lifter and a complete powered cover system are not the same product.

When to consider an automatic cover system

Consider an automatic system when opening and closing the spa is central to your project. The Covana Legend raises by key switch into an overhead shelter, then lowers back over a compatible swim spa. It changes the routine of lifting and storing a manual cover, but adds powered equipment, installation requirements and operating limits.

An overhead shelter is not a fully enclosed room or an unrestricted all-weather structure. Follow the exact product manual. Covana’s Legend pre-delivery guidance lists a maximum wind speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) while raised.

Compare the purchase, not just the cover

  • Manual replacement: focus on the exact cover specification, handling, storage and any compatible lifter.
  • Automatic system: assess the complete equipment configuration, spa fit, foundation, anchoring, operating clearances, electrical supply and installer arrangements.
  • For either choice: request a clear quotation identifying what is supplied, what requires separate work and which warranty applies. Neither option is universally right for every project.

Hot tub or swim spa? The model family matters

Covana’s support guidance distinguishes Legend for compatible rectangular swim spas, Evolution for compatible square, rectangular or round spas, and Oasis for compatible square or rectangular spas. These families have different fit requirements and are not interchangeable.

The listing discussed here is the Legend 18-foot automated swim spa cover in Mocha/Latte. Other families are mentioned for comparison, not as a statement of stock or availability.

What must be checked before ordering?

Start with your spa make, model, year and measured length, width and height. Photograph the top rim, side walls, headrests and surrounding space. For Legend, Covana identifies flat, parallel side walls and a flat top contact surface at least 1 inch wide as initial requirements. Family-wide dimensions do not prove that an individual spa fits the 18-foot unit.

Have the exact configuration reviewed against current manufacturer drawings. Then assess foundation suitability, anchoring, drainage, delivery access, overhead obstacles, moving-part clearances, electrical supply and future service access. A stated cover length alone is not a fit approval.

Compare the total project scope, not only the cover price. Request an itemized quotation identifying the supplied power version, accessories, delivery, installation, electrical work and foundation preparation. Do not assume those services are included.

Installation and warranty are part of the decision

Covana’s 2026 Legend owner’s manual requires a certified Covana installer. Its published 2026 warranty also sets conditions around authorized-dealer purchase and installation, licensed electrical work, maintenance and proof of purchase.

The published policy applies to eligible original owners and residential installations; do not assume commercial use qualifies. Warranty periods and covered expense categories vary. Read the full policy and confirm which version and start date apply to your unit rather than treating one duration as full-system coverage.

Which should you choose?

Choose a replacement manual cover when you want an appropriately specified replacement and are comfortable with manual handling and storage. Investigate an automatic system when powered access and an overhead shelter suit your goals, and your spa and site can meet its installation requirements. Compatibility, project scope and your preferred routine should decide.
